Summary |
The purpose of this RFI is to solicit feedback from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on issues related to market opportunities to enhance and expand upon certain AMO system software tools and related assets. At the present time these software tool resources/assets are primarily maintained and managed by the U. S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO). This RFI seeks information to assist with the transition of these resources to be primarily or solely managed by a third party (or parties). AMO is particularly interested in business strategies to ensure: 1) The resource content is maintained, improved and enhanced; 2) The resources remain available to the industrial sector; 3) The current and future market needs for these system assets are addressed; and 4) Adaptation to rapidly changing and progressing electronic and IT infrastructure is embraced and addressed. |

Summary |
NOAA’s long-term climate goal has the following objectives: 1) Improved scientific understanding of the changing climate system and its impacts; 2) Assessments of current and future states of the climate system that identify potential impacts and inform science, service, and stewardship decisions; 3) Mitigation and adaptation choices supported by sustained, reliable, and timely climate services; and 4) A climate-literate public that understands its vulnerabilities to a changing climate and makes informed decisions. Achieving the first objective requires a number of core capabilities be supported, including: a) Understanding and modeling; b) Observing systems, data stewardship, and climate monitoring; c) Predictions and projections; d) Integrated service development and decision support. These core capabilities and research efforts now allow progress to be made toward the provision of sustained, reliable, and timely climate services, focused initially on the following societal challenges: 1) Climate impacts on water resources; 2) Coasts and climate resilience; 3) Sustainability of marine ecosystems; 4) Changes in extremes of weather and climate. Each of the Competitions announced in this Federal Funding Opportunity addresses one or more of these core capabilities or societal challenges. It is expected that applications submitted in response to this Opportunity will identify their relevance to NOAA’s climate science and services by indicating which core capabilities and/or societal challenges will be addressed by the proposed work. |

Summary |
This notice announces the availability of EPA grant funds and solicits proposals from eligible entities to conduct research, technical assistance, and/or training activities that will enable the entity to develop an area-wide plan for brownfields assessment, cleanup, and subsequent reuse. Brownfields area-wide planning (BFAWP) grant-funded activities must be directed to one or more brownfield site(s) located in a specific area, such as a neighborhood, a district (e.g., downtown, arts or shopping area), a local commercial corridor, a community waterfront, or a city block. Each project funded under this grant must result in an area-wide plan which includes specific plan implementation strategies for assessing, cleaning up, and reusing the brownfields site(s) as well as related brownfields and project area revitalization strategies. |

Food Resilience Climate Data Initiative: Special Opportunity Microsoft Azure for Research Award |

Summary |
In response to President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, Microsoft is offering a second Climate Data Initiative (CDI) Award program. This program supports the White House Climate Data Initiative’s goals of preparedness for and resilience to climate change impacts. The latest award will provide scientists and decision-makers with access to Microsoft Azure cloud-computing resources to develop innovative data-driven projects focused on the challenge of the resilience of food sources to climate change. This effort will help give communities across the United States the information and tools they need to plan for current and future climate impacts. The Microsoft Azure for Research program will grant 12 months of free cloud computing resources to 20 awardees. Each award provides up to 180,000 hours of cloud computing time and 20 terabytes of cloud storage to be used for the project. |

The NWS Research to Operations (R2O) Initiative is a NOAA initiative to expand and accelerate critical weather forecasting research to operations to address growing service demands and increase the accuracy of weather forecasts. This will be achieved through, (1) accelerated development and implementation of improved global weather prediction models; (2) improved data assimilation techniques; (3) nested regional prediction capabilities; (4) post-processing forecast tools and techniques and (5) improved software architecture and system engineering. The NWS R2O Initiative is soliciting proposals from all public and private sources for projects involving applied science, modeling and/or data assimilation that supports development of the Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS), effective assimilation for environmental observations at global and regional scales and, hurricane and other high-impact weather forecast models that meet societal requirements to effectively mitigate economic disruption. |

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announces the release of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Solicitation to develop and commercialize new environmental technologies. EPA is calling for small businesses to apply for Phase I awards up to $100,000 to demonstrate proof of concept in one of the following topic areas: air and climate, manufacturing, toxic chemicals, water, building materials, food waste, and homeland security. Phase I awardees are eligible to receive Phase II funding, up to $300,000 for two years, through an additional application process. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is excited to announce the Amazon Climate Research Grant Program. In support of the US Government’s Climate Action Plan and the White House Climate Data Initiative, Amazon Web Services is commiting to award a total of 50 million core hours of supercomputing using Amazon EC2 Spot Instances with training and guidance from the AWS Scientific Computing team to apply to research on better understanding and mitigating climate change. Postdoctoral Fellows Program: Food Systems Resilience to Climate Change |

The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), located in Annapolis, Maryland, invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship beginning early January 2015 that will be a part of a new SESYNC–USDA collaboration to catalyze data-driven research on food systems resilience to climate change. The SESYNC postdoctoral fellow will also lead the planning, organization, and management of the new SESYNC–USDA “Data to Motivate Synthesis” Program. This new program will provide a unique opportunity for 25 early career scholars to co-develop research projects through a series of data exploration workshops with the cyberinfrastructure support needed to understand and predict food systems resilience under a changing climate. The fellow’s research and program management responsibilities will be integrated through the SESYNC–USDA “Data to Motivate Synthesis” Program to leverage new data resources to develop an independent research project, catalyze interdisciplinary team research projects among early career scholars, and co-develop additional and/or complementary research projects with program participants. |

World Community Grid is seeking proposals from research organizations interested in harnessing the immense power of Internet-connected computers to accelerate humanitarian research. Our goal is to support innovative efforts that will benefit most from this technology and promise to deliver significant results on the most pressing issues facing the global community. To meet this goal, World Community Grid plans to implement as many as five research projects per year. World Community Grid is designed as a resource for research done with a philanthropic or humanitarian purpose and will only be available to projects conducted for public and not-for-profit purposes. The Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research in the Office of Science, U.S. DOE, hereby invites proposals for basic research that significantly improves the resiliency of scientific applications in the context of emerging architectures for extreme scale computing platforms. The next-generation of scientific discovery will be enabled by research developments that can effectively harness significant or disruptive advances in computing technology. Applications running on extreme scale computing systems will generate results with orders of magnitude higher resolution and fidelity, achieving a time-to-solution significantly shorter than possible with todays high performance computing platforms. However, indications are that these new systems will experience hard and soft errors with increasing frequency, necessitating research to develop new approaches to resilience that enable applications to run efficiently to completion in a timely manner and achieve correct results.
